Wearing my long branches today, bought these off ebay. They were originally golden brown and are CXL, with some serious finish issues. I decided to dye them navy.

Somewhat interesting as the 65 should fit pretty close to your brannock, at least with me it did (12B), although they might be a touch long. Keep in mind that a shoe is going to have some give in the width as you wear it, while the length isn't going to change much, if at all. If you have "moderate" heel slip, it might go away as the sole breaks in and loosens up. How do the v-gaps look? Whatever you do, make sure your pinky toe isn't ramming into the toe box, that is something that will NOT go away and is a sure fire way to know your shoes are too short.

I would look at the brannock again, keep in mind that you should be going with the the higher of the two between heel to toe / heel to ball and use that number to see your width (you can even take some pics if you want to show us).

@Shazb0t once the shoes break in, the heel slippage will go away. I recommend getting the 8.5E over the 8.5D

I wouldn't say that it's normal or ideal, but not every foot is going to fit every last. The heel slip should dissipate some as the sole loosens up. If it doesn't, you might have to wear thicker socks or think about adding a heel grip or something to dial in the fit.

The case has been made for cork over poron, but poron is not all bad and some prefer the added cushion.

As I understand it, you're not choosing between cork or poron. You're choosing between leather or poron, but the cork is there regardless.

Seems to be an issue with individual foot shape. I have a similar issue. 10 1/2 D fits toe but loose in heel, 10 fits heel but toes are tight. It depends on the shoe/last which problem is worse and which way I go. It's true some heel slip will go away but not a huge amount. I've unloaded shoes on eBay because the heel slip was bugging me too much and wasn't getting better.

Shoebank lists a Dark Brown, which is the Cognac, in both sizes, for $137, at the Riverhead, NY store, which is less than what I paid for mine. Give them a call.
