Advice on Winter Coat

Hello all

I'm so thankful for finding this forum, which has been an enjoyable source of information. I have been lurking for a while but now need some specific advice.

I live in a tropical country and have never left my country so do not have any experience living in a place where the seasons change.

Next month, I will be moving to Cambridge, UK, for one year, for study. I have been looking around for an appropriate winter coat. I quite like the look of the Gloverall Duffle Coat (http://www.gloverall.com/mens/mens-classic-duffle.html). I would appreciate any advice anyone can give on this choice, including whether its style is appropriate for a university town like Cambridge and whether it is appropriate for use in the climate in Cambridge. Also, would you recommend the full length duffle, or the mid-length version? If there is any other advice or recommendations I would be grateful as well.

If a duffle coat is what you want, I doubt you could do much better than that one. Long or mid-length comes down to taste, but I would choose the latter.

However, I would suggest that the reefer jacket is a much more stylish garment.

I like duffle coats and think one would be appropriate for Cambridge. Imo the long ones look much better than the short ones. They're also warmer, but bulkier. Chrysalis made really good ones and still may. A quilted jacket from somewhere like Barbour, Polo, or Beaver of Bolton would be a good alternative. Not as warm, but more compact. Wearing one w/ a sweater and a wool beanie would get you through the coldest weather there. Here's a good SF thread on them.

You'll probably also need a good waterproof jacket.

Since you live in a tropical country and will be moving to the
UK for one year you might consider a raincoat with a removable
lining. It should be warm enough w/ a jacket or sweater and
and may be worn w/o the lining when you return home.

Here's an example from a premier British maker. Others
are available at lower prices.
