One of the few areas where we are not at the same page. In the right context they are excellent.

We're one the same page. Let me rephrase...loafers are awful for me. I don't mind many of them on others...unless they are tassel.

By Americans, you do mean poorly dressed uninformed Americans who in no way represent those Americans who know anything about clothing, right?

:)

MF, I like it overall, but round-toed welted penny loafers in black leather don't do it for me. I like black tassels (welted) and bit loafers (moccasins) a lot, though, but black penny loafers just don't do it for me, and I think a welted penny needs a little bit of a chisel to look great.

If I end up doing a suit with a turtleneck, and I will, I'll probably go for very dark brown chelseas, or brown bit loafers.

As to the positive response from the lady in your life, do you have dark hair? Because then the dark sweater really ties into that in a way a light-colored shirt wouldn't.

Yep, dark hair/beard. The penny loafers are not ideal, but the Meermin last is sleeker than most American ones, and I picked them up for cheap (£70). Perfect shoes for when I have to go out after work. No need to worry about ruining my Carmina/G&G cap toes in a pub. Eventually I'll get some nicer, sleeker ones, but there's no rush. This'll do in the meantime.

I do like the idea of Chelseas and perhaps single monks. Both very minimalist shoes.

I'm currently trying to gain a deeper understanding of neat or repeating pattern ties and odd jackets, especially patterned flannels and tweeds. The rule seems to be that neats should not be paired with odd jackets unless the odd jacket is solid and in a fabric that's more urban than rustic. That's where my understanding ends.

Consider these three odd jacket fits: do they work? I think two of the three are in very good taste and the third is at least good.

I dunno - this sounds like a bogus SF rule to me, only known to a handful of extreme cognoscenti.

Clags has made an entire career out of incorporating neat-pattern ties into non-suit outfits.

Probably has more to do with fabrics/textures? Silk neats go with suits, wool Challis with SC's, that sort of thing?

Sounds right. Here's a fit @clarinetplayer posted over on WAYWRN today. Neat tie with a patterned SC.

To me, this is virtuosic.
