Really. It's just embarrassing for me. If you aren't positive that you are higher tech than like 98% of people, just don't try. I've been kind of light-grey-hat for going on 15-16 years now. You should just assume the same about any website owner. And this is some seriously remedial effort.

Yeah, dual or triple or whatever # of identities would be entertaining. Imagine if someone were arguing with themselves in the CE thread. You could be for Obama, Hillary, McCain and no one at the same time.

Or commenting on their own posts in WAYWRN in the same thread.

How about giving romantic, or financial advice to themselves.

The possibilities are endless.

I admin at another board (not on the tech side, just on the moderating side) and there are a few others things one can look at to spot duals as well as IP. But frankly, it's not all that difficult to set up a proxy and then there's little one can do.

Still, it's nice when duals are easy to spot.

Try mixing in peanut butter or fruit yogurt. Your taste bud will be grateful forever after.

Except banning known proxy server IPs (ranges), which I've started doing. Most people aren't industrious enough to set up their own or find an obscure one, so this solves most of that.

It might be easier for him if he just created one new user name called "Sybil" or "Herschel Walker". Either way...

I thought that perhaps Soph had changed his user name to go undercover.

Haha, the first thing I thought was that Conne had started another account to bug Soph...

Sure, makes sense... but eventually the persistent trolls find out how to set up their own after you keep banning the other ones they try.

By the way, how do you deal with likely duals with RIPE network IP ranges? This is a real nuisance too - many legitimate people post from these network ranges and you can't just ban the entire network. Personalised data of the kind I'm sure you also look at helps to some degree to identify duals where you can guess who the other identity is and so can compare easily. But when you're not sure who the dual is, it's a lot of extra work to match up this sort of data in any sort of foolproof way. False negative and false positives occur. Anyway, I'm sidetracking I guess, but would appreciate any advice...

Well this can be checked, assuming the person doesn't ONLY use SF at work. If J (or any mod) logs into the moderation part of VBulletin they can check IP's for users. If they are different people chances are they've logged on at their house, which would give both users a long string of separate IPs. You can also view their ISP which could also be different.

I moderate another forum and in buying/selling some people post on 3 or 4 user names to make it seem like everyone and their brother is interested in the item so that when Joe Blow views the thread he thinks "Oh I've got to jump on this great deal or it'll be gone." It works too, unless they get perma-banned.

Yup, but what sucks is you can end up banning people in the range who didn't do anything wrong. You could even ban future users, IIRC, that fall into the range.

Where I moderate they don't allow me to ban ranges, so I've had to ban the same person literally over 30 times in one case (AND HE STILL POSTS!!).

Excuse my ignorance (I'm "technologically challenged") but if I just ordered a similar suit from fredrik80 last week am I to assume that I've been scammed?
