Go to any craft or fabric store and buy a seam ripper for a few bucks. Use the pointy end to pull up the first stitch, then slide the end with a little plastic nub under the stitches and run it along the seam. You still have to be careful not to cut into the fabric, but that's what this tool was made for, and it works pretty well.
