i've spent quite a lot of time up there and it is another world ... but not all bad by any means. the stockton delta area is really quite beautiful. i have a very soft spot in my heart (and possibly my head) for the small farm towns around Fresno, Visalia, et al. Even Bakersfield isn't all bad. but none of them are anything like the stereotypical views of California.

Mojave is pretty depressing, as are Victorville and Adelanto. For aptly named hellholes, how about Boron (world's largest open-pit borax mine) and of course Needles (lots of drugs, plus it was used as the prototype for the computer game Wasteland, yay!).

Every time I go up to Mammoth I can't help but think of all the places along and off the 395. I have nothing bad to say about Bishop, though.

Once you get into Inyo County, all those places further up 395 are cool in a way...Lone Pine, Big Pine, and of course Bishop.

Well, very different kinds of awful. There is nothing quite like Detroit in California that I know of. That combination of blight, depopulation, physical decay, and dense urbanity does not exist. You can find perhaps any two but not all four.

What I do get a sense of, from this San Bernardino and others like it, is that moreso than other parts of the US, one can get a sense that you're almost in a different country, and not a nice one at that.

Do you miss California still? Do you regret moving?
