You guys are so smart and edgy. Thanks for stopping by and letting us know that you've read every single post in the thread, allowing you to boil down every single argument here into one of two categories. I envy your ability to lump people into groups so effectively and efficiently.

I read a few responses. I feel that college athletics are good. I believe you learn a lot more through competition and teammork than in the class room or library. Anyway, I do agree that the really big sports like Basketball and Football are basically profession b-level championships and are far removed from education.

Well, here is something to add to the argument...

I am a former D1 varsity athlete. Track and Field. I went to a National Championship winning school. My sport lost money, as most do.

We make tons of money on basketball and football.

Every year, I send my old coach a check for $1,500. Not a lot of money, but I am still fairly young. I would never just donate that money to the school. I have teammates that do the same/feel the same.

I am one example. That is $1,500 per year (likely more in the future) that the school would not get without me having been an athlete.

Just something to consider.

that information is readily available in journals and things like that. google it. i'd link you to mine (the one that our president wrote), but i don't think you or anyone else gives a ****. and i've have to go find it again.

but yeah, the point about schools losing money? thats everywhere.

I think college sports are very entertaining, but I'm not sure they're great for colleges academically. I perceive the purpose of universities to prepare students for either research or to further educate them academically so that they can fulfill more complex non-blue collar jobs and I don't see that college sports help perpetuate this.

It's a fact that some schools make tons of money via college sports (UF makes millions a year selling tickets?), but I'm not sure it's good for their academic programs.

If we took a list of the top 100 universities in the US and mapped them based on some academic criterion (publications/student scores or something) against atheletic programs I would probably look pretty bad.

Again, not true. In fact I asked that you would at least provide something to back up one of your beliefs.
