so are there concrete pricepoints on the new leather lined 405's and chromexcel 405's? does anyone have good, clear pics of each?

So I used some neutral polish (Kiwi) on my Black Indies for the first time and about an hour after doing so, they developed a whitish haze on certain patches..

Anybody have any ideas WTF just happened?

Black cordo? You aren't supposed to polish cordo

FROM Alden of Carmel webpage ...

For shell cordovan shoes, Alden recommends using paste wax polish, and not shoe cream.

Here are the "don'ts" of shell cordovan care:

1. Do not use 'neutral' polish
2. Do not clean cordovan shoes using saddle soap
3. Do not attempt to clean cordovan shoes using petroleum distillates or cleaning fluids
4. Do not use any spray shines or aerosol type waterproofs
5. Do not attempt to dry wet shell cordovan shoes with heat or a heater. Wipe them dry, and allow them to dry naturally
6. Do not attempt to polish shell cordovan shoes while wet

are these cordovan?

if not, it's probably just the fact that the leather can't absorb all the polish and a residue is left on the surface. try wiping it off with a paper towel

This is my first post. This thread has been very helpful in my decision to pick up a pair of stock 405 Indy boots. I am on a list at Sherman Bros. here in Philly since they are out of stock until February. I plan on checking out a few of the Alden lasts (trubalance, Barry, Leydon, etc.) on lower priced shoes before I go nuts and order some shell or special edition Indy Boots. I have flat feet so fit can be tricky.

I have a question about socks in relation to fit. Could anyone who owns a pair of Indy boots, that fit perfectly, tell me if you are judging fit while wearing boot socks, or normal casual weight socks.
I have a pair of Alden 901 cap toes (Hampton last, size 9.5 D) that are the only comfortable dress shoes I have ever owned. I wear thin wool dress socks with these shoes. I plan to try the Indy boots at 9 D since I had to pick a size to reserve at the store. Should I bring boot socks with me to try them on, or can I get a good fit wearing cotton casual socks (Marcoliani, Brooks Bros)?

i can tell you that i normally wear a 12D and had a pair of 405's in 11.5d that i thought fit well, however that was with very thin dress socks which is what i was used to wearing. once i tried them with thicker wool socks (which i normally wear with my boots) they were tight on me. they ended up being defective and i returned them, so whether or not they would have loosened up i do not know

as far as what you should bring to wear when trying them on i'm going to suggest you bring what you'd like to normally wear when wearing the boots. not trying to be smart about this, but really its a matter of personal preference.

Your account is reassuring. It sounds like a precise fit, which would be better for my feet. I would rather wear my normal casual socks, though I may pick up some Marcoliani boot socks to try out, since my current boot socks are very thick.

No, sorry, these are not shell, just calf. I'll try a damp paper towel and see if that works.
