Good tailor in Vancouver?

I had been planning to take a Chan suit (made last November) with me back to HK for alterations when I visit later this year. Specifically, these include having the trouser waist and legs taken in for a slimmer profile and altering of the jacket for more a slender sleeve fit. When I inquired with Chan recently, they indicated a cost of $500 HKD for the work (~$75 Cdn at current exchange). The cost isn’t the issue, because I am asking for significant changes, but bringing the suit back is because I was planning to travel very light.

So my question is this: would anyone consider using a local tailor like Oakridge or Modernize as opposed to taking the suit back to HK? I’m sure either can do the work fine, although I haven’t yet inquired about price (based on the substantial work that JeffsWood had done at Oakridge for instance - see above - I’m guessing ~$150?). The other reason for possibly not bringing the suit back to Chan is that I was originally planning to have another suit made with them while in HK, so could kill two birds with one stone, but circumstances have changed and I won’t be this time around.

I think that Oakridge could do the pants no problem - there have been several people who have had them remove pleats (not easy to do successfully) with good results. I'd wonder about the jacket though - if they're slimming the sleeves what's going to happen with the arm holes on the body? That might be better to take to Chan, but certainly take it in to William or Joy at Oakridge and discuss with them.

Assuming you're asking in this thread because you're in the Lower Mainland? Ingledews sells a decent cedar shoe tree and they've basically got a store in every major mall here ...

I have never had luck around, I have no problem finding them, but they are overpirced. I bought a large lot off ebay of Allen Edmonds shoe tree's a while back and it worked out to under $10 per tree including shipping etc. It took about a month for the right deal to come up though. At the mokent I have more tree's then shoes, but I am sure I can resolve that problem.

Thanks gents, I will inquire with her. To dclloyd's question, maybe a better way to put it is that I'd like the sleeves slightly tapered (from, say, the mid-upper arm down), so I'm thinking that would not affect the arm hole. I could actually live without this alteration, but getting it done would make the jacket even better.

I had Steve Samson make a suit and some shirts for me over the summer . The results were pretty good I think. The suit is probably better fitting than anything that I've tried on. I even had some surgeon cuffs done up. No real big complaints. The shirts I think are good, but still a work in progress. Overall I would probably go back. In fact, I'll probably get some more shirts and probably another suit in the future.

Shifting gears slightly ...

I have a nice shearling jacket that needs some significant tailoring work done on it to make it fit properly. Is there a good (high quality rather than cheap-and-okay) leather specialist in the Lower Mainland you folks can suggest?

yes vancouver.. comparable to woodlore + J&M cedar trees?

Been wondering about trying a MTM suit for me, thanks for the photos. The back photo looks like the center vent isn't quite center and is pulling a little. Is that just the way you're standing? Shoulders and chest look great!

So, have any Vancouverites tried this fellow?

i need shoulder n chest alteration on a LEATHER DOWN jacket....

so i guess only the most experienced would be up for the task...
