So, this morning my seven-year-old son asked me, "Dad, if we bought a mansion, would it have a butler and a maid?" I told him that there were still such things as butlers and maids, if you could afford them.

He replied excitedly, "So we could buy a butler?"

This prompted a discussion about how one does not buy butlers, but hires them. His next question was whether the butler would call him "Master."

I explained to him that "Master" was a somewhat old-fashioned way of addressing boys too young to be called "Mister," and that he could call himself "Master James" if he really wanted to. It was an entertaining conversation. My wife walked into the middle of it and, without any clear idea what we were talking about, gave me that look that says, "Are you corrupting your children again?"

There's a wealth of insights into Matt packed into that one little sentence.

Jesus.... how rich are you two?

When I was a kid I had to do the dishes myself.... and one summer, I broke the dishwasher, and as a lesson I had to do the dishes every night by hand! Woe is me.

Does that mean "Little Asparagus Sprig"?

Anyway, who says you need a mansion to have a butler?

I was a butler for a couple of years. Of course, I preferred the term, "Filipino house boy."

My sister once broke the insinkerator, so we ate out until my parents came back from Europe.

I don't particularly like how dishwashers clean, so I always hand clean first before putting the dishes into the machine.

Maids tend to be rather inexpensive in South America (Jehovah's Witnesses tend to make the best maids, since they don't steal anything).
