Grand Seikos cost that much and many of the in the know watch guys prefer them over the commonly known brands. Then there's the Ball Watch Company....

Explorers are submersible they are just not rated to the depths of subs. Can't remember the details but I think it's 100m which is deeper than you will ever go unless you are a deep sea welder.
What kind of activities will you be doing that require you to wear a watch underwater? I swop my Rolex for a navy seals luminox when I go diving.

i had a rolex datejust for a while. they use what they call 904 stainless steel or something like that. its a type of alloy they came up with that is supposed to be very scratch resistant. i found it to be true. my watch took a beating and looked great, the only part that got scratched was the clasp, but they beefed the clasp up the year after i got mine. good luck.

Breitling is a good watch for one you intend to beat on--nice and heavy and durable feeling.

If you're not crazy about the Sub colors, have you checked out Omega POs? They're in that price range and add orange (handy for divers) to the mix. Excellent looking watch, IMO.
