Welcome to the private market - nobody wants to pay for snow removal by the city (i.e. more taxes), so they are left underhanded when snow happens.

Yes, this is an example of free markets.

You people are squares. It's a great practice, part of the whole living in a society thing. People also do it the night before parades.

Standard practice here in Philly, especially on smaller streets that the city doesn't plow.

Huh? Snow plows plow roads not parking spaces.

The dibs system is a big chicago thing.

Doesn't happen somewhere like minneapolis where they have figured out how to clear the streets (albeit by declaring a snow emergency and telling you that half the street is closed)

This is so STATEN ISLAND. People get territorial over there spots there when there isn't any snow. My parents included. In Brooklyn, its less common. Although I did witness a guy dig out a spot in Bensonhurst for a *********** to pull right into it. He banged on the guys window, and said if he didn't move, "first I'mma break your windshield, then I'mma break your face." All of this in the presence of a uniformed NYPD officer and car. The *********** moved.

I feel if you leave the spot you dug out, it fair game. But I feel in the more suburban areas, where people don't really understand private and public space, its more common.

I think today's NY Daily News had a few letters about this.

I have also never hear do this. And the snow beside driveways is literally about 6 feet where I live now, so not because of a lack of snow. Also, we rarely get residential streets cleared. I just don't see it. I have never had the need to dig out a parking spot.

If you don't live in one of the old-school residential neighborhoods of chicago, don't do this.

If you tried to do this on a lakeview street filled with walkups, somebody would probably just park on top of your chair.

Haven't seen or heard of this in Indy. I didn't know people did this.
