Use your laptop for CD player it has better CD drive than 99% of stand alone "audio" players.
For cheap amp try Cambridge Audio or Music Hall or Denon (my preference would be MH).

Good recommendations except for CD drive comment...highly variable in my experience and most computer dacs are terrible sounding, especially on laptop.

This has been my setup for a few years now: Powerbook G4 > Mini³/Alien DAC > Grado SR80 for headphones or Audioengine 2's for speakers Never had anything else to compare it to, so it sounds great to me

Can you be more specific? I'm looking for a pair of smaller floorstanders or monitors for a small studio (~650 sq ft).

Read our Totem review. Much the same, but on a smaller, cuter scale. Vince makes great speakers (Model 1), but the Arro and Totems are not my or my other writers' cup of tea. Like I said earlier in the thread to another poster, check out Mike Lenehan's monitors for the steal of the last and new decade. Two reviews at the magazine. Unless you listen to this kind of stuff all day long, better to take music that you like and that you listen to regularly that has bass. That will tell you more about the sub and your needs than some specialized thing that happens to have super-deep bass.

Yes, they are excellent. Big Reference 3a fan here. Heard the Grand Veena recently and was impressed.

Bought 4 budget Phono amplifiers (Cambridge, Rotel, Monolithic, Creek) dismissed all of them as being inaccurate in one way or another

sold them at a loss and waiting for Graham Slee Reflex C which hopefully will be competent enough to support all vinegar-pissing reviews.
If all fails back to the "drawing board".
