Cheese and crackers! I had no idea an article of clothing could cost as much as a house! Is a $130,000 Hermes Jacket really 1000x better than a J. Crew jacket?

This morning my wife asked to borrow my grey ON v-neck sweater because she needed something to go with her suit. I started to get all concerned about stretching because, you know, she has more in the chest area than I do, then I thought, what the hell, it's a $14 sweater! One of the advantages of going cheap, I guess. Easier to share.

I bought my favorite peacoat at Old Navy for $40

but in general the ON stuff usually doesn't fit me. It's either too wide or too short for my lanky ass so I stick with H&M for my cheap stuff.

Seriously? On the peacoat? When did you get it?

I was sort of hoping to find a similar good deal at ON because I knew they were stocking peacoats this year. So I went in the other day to check them out, hoping vainly that they might be of passable quality. I liked the deep pocket inside. Nice outside pockets. A bit boxy but a nice fit, right below the waist but not too short or too long. Then I looked at the collar. What crap. Ridiculously floppy and ultra wide. Tried to "pop it" and it fell right back. And for 60 bucks? I wouldn't have spent 10 on it.

I hope you got a much more substantial earlier model of this.

Damn, I'm sorry. I'm reverting to ON bashing. Back on topic!

How to dress like James Bond in Casino Royale--on the cheap

Posted for your amusement...

As one who was inspired to make a couple of wardrobe choices based on this flick (my peacoat, for one), I really enjoyed this article. I think the guy makes some lame choices (those awful chukkas, for one, and the Target pants), but overall it's kind of fun.

Yes. Hermes jackets involve more animal killing. See kitonbrioni for reference.

I bought a pair of sneakers at Steve & Barry's for $9.99 that are as good as any other casual shoe I have. Awesome bargain. Unfortunately they went bankrupt, so I don't even know if they're selling anything at all now.

It does. You have to be a little careful though. The good stuff's there, but so is a lot of junk.

in the USA many large scale retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target, etc., have released or are in the process of releasing their own "in-house fashion design labels." Target in particular has been really pushing their clothes, much to their own success. I know they are trying to pull in legitimate (i.e. well known) designers as well; I remember a while ago they released a line that had been partially collaborated with David Bowie, so there were lots of vests, french collared shirts etc. Wal-mart is reviving this OP fashion line now too, personally I wouldn't check out any clothes sold at wal-mart and target just because I hate being inside of the store what with the lights and crowds and all, but they are definitely trying to manufacture "cheap chic"

That's the downside of Target clothes. I find shopping there extremely depressing. I find that if I don't "feel good" about a place, I often resent the clothes I purchase there, no matter how good they may be. I often end up questioning my choice. There's an interesting retail psychology aroud this, I think.

Allow an admitedly over-aged insight here:

Yesterday I went into my office in Old Navy jeans, a white shirt I bought at TJ Maxx, a "wool" herringbone waistcoat from Target and shoes from Famous Footwear. Total "investment" about $50. And I got more "you look nice" comments than I do wearing my usual (much) more expensive wardrobe.

As Bridgen said above "style" and "cost" aren't mutually inclusive.

^I would take that as a sign to burn my clothes if people who know nothing about style said that to me.
