increase physicality of play
decrease interconference games/increase intraconference games, nothing more pointless than a lakers/nets game or a cavs/twolves game

neither will happen

Rivalries are difficult to get now that every player are good friends with each other. I mean all these stars like Kobe, Wade, Bosh, Lebron, etc... will all play with each other in the Olympics again and they are all practically best friends over the summer. The only one who has a chance of having a rivalry with is Boston because Pierce, KG and Rondo as assholes. Other than that, maybe Lebron and the Cavs because they can get arrogant but the chances of Lebrons staying in Cleveland is slim so that won't happen.

I think the last good rivalry was the Lakers & Phoenix, just Kobe and Bell hating each other was epic enough. Kobe with his cheap elbows and Bell clotheslining Kobe, it was good while it lasted although the Suns did take most of the wins in that rivalry.

I do not think that makes NBA bad though, there are bigger problems in the NBA than that.

the NBA sucks because there are too many teams. fold up the non-competitive teams and consolidate talent so that we are never subjected to the horrors of Nets vs. Clippers again.

I often hear this suggestion made on radio talk shows or in articles. I think it's a good idea, but could it ever happen? How would this work realistically? Would the owner or the league be forced buy out all of the players who are under contract on the teams that are dissolving? Would the released players be relegated to having to sign contracts for the minimum salary with whatever teams pick them up? Or would the league get rid of the salary cap for a year so that the released players can sign (or transfer) long term contracts with a new team?

I just don't see how the league could ever force an unwilling owner to sell, first and foremost. He paid for the team; he's not going to liquidate it at whatever price or auction the league sets.

Theoretically, the league should function like a free market. Teams that continue to suck for extended periods of time will, in theory, start losing fans and eventually not generate enough revenue to stay solvent. Thus, they'd either fold or sell to a new owner. You just rarely see them fold, is all. There always seems to be an eager buyer in the market. And fans seem to have an uncanny ability to stick with a losing team.

+1. That's b/c half of the games each year are going to be home games and they're going to see great teams come into town for cheap. And the idea of getting rid of half the teams in the NBA is just incredibly stupid.

True. And if anything, I see one possible future direction for the NBA being a massive upscaling/expansion into a world basketball league. It may not happen soon, but it's the direction the league could (and maybe should?) eventually head in, using the European club soccer leagues as a model. There is a massive NBA fan base in China, not to mention lots of basketball fans across the world. It would not surprise me at all if, in 10 to 15 years, the league expands internationally to avoid losing out to homegrown Chinese leagues or what have you. It's just smart business. I'm sure this statement is controversial/communist/anti-American/Satanic/etc. to quite a few people. But think about it. Obviously, there'd be serious headaches trying to incorporate teams from international cities used to playing non-NBA-style ball. But as far as I know, the Chinese adore/play the game as it's played here. Travel would be a serious pain **********, though, and I have no idea how to solve that issue.

I do not see a worldwide basketball league happening. All teams have back to back games several times in the season so traveling from one country to the other would be crazy and players would be too jet lagged to even play.

I like that there are plenty of teams out there, I would hate to see one team have an All Star players as a starting 5. I mean just imagine where all these good to great players would go? First each teams salary cap will have to be raised at least 3-4 times, unless each players take a lot less money, which will not happen for the most part.

What needs to disappear is the WNBA, I mean all the WNBA teams are reporting a loss and it is just Stern keeping it alive because of his ego. Every time I see a WNBA game the arena is practically empty, no matter who is playing. Even the finals doesn't draw a sold out arena.

i think New Jersey should take one for the league

and LA will still have a team without the Clippers, although being from LA i know that there are people who root for the Clips for the sole reason that they cannot stand Laker fans

but seriously - MLS contracted recently, and MLB is constantly in serious talks to contract their league. i don't know much about how those plans are structured, but the NBA could definitely see how they did that and see if it's feasible...if they wanted to do this.

MLS contracted but not because of talent dilution. They have since added teams and expanded aggressively.

the problem with the nba is every game is wither all pick and roll or all off-the-dribble isolation.
