I might actually buy some like that. Maybe.

The shorts Bastian is wearing are faded Nantucket reds. You could probably pick up a pair here:

Murray's shorts are nicer in person. It's a canvas weave, not a twill, and they're not as wide as those look in the pics, IMO. They look like culottes online.

My J.Crew solid old-school bermuda shorts arrived yesterday. They have an 11" inseam which hits me right at the knee. I also have a couple pairs of J.Crew 9" essential chino shorts.

What is your height? I'm 5'6" so I'm thinking the 7" essential chinos (online only) will hit right above my knee.

Sure, it gets hot but damn, shorts? Am I going swimming? On a cruise? Playing lawn polo/golf?

+2, and I wear a jacket most days too, even in the blaring heat.

If I wore a jacket in Philly summers, my shirt would literally be soaked with sweat all day. I would love to wear a jacket every day year-round (I basically could when I lived in the Bay Area, actually), but the results would be... grim... if I tried that here. It would NOT be stylish. Aren't you in the land of "eh" and mullets, though? Does it actually get that hot there?

the only shorts I own are camo cut offs I used to wear to hardcore gigs, which will not get worn anymore.

+1 to the Anti-shorts brigade.

I've got the camo shorts from past hardcore gigs as well.

And actually, I'm still wearing them. Along with the Sick of it All t-shirts. But only to the gym.

I absolutely love that Michael Bastian look. I think I'll have to buy a pair of Nantucket Reds.
