Just got back from Crazy, Stupid, Love. I expected it to be a chick flick but I was pleasantly surprised. The SF crowd will like the style stuff in there too.

I watched The Dark Knight last night. When I saw it in theatres the sound system was so loud I couldn't understand what anyone was saying enough to put the plot together. It's a lot better when you know what they're saying.

TDK has awesome sound. My neighbours called security on me when i had it playing (seriously). The shotgun blasts in the bank scene are percussive as hell.

i watched 13 asssasins by takashi miike recently. **** was thoroughly good. there were a few miike like moments in there but for the most part he showed restraint, preferring to show the horror of things through the actor's abilities and their facial expressions.

a typical jidaigeki, but done very very well. at times it reminded me of grindhouse or red cliff or dynasty warriors, but still quite good. quite a few moments where i couldnt help but to exclaim how good this movie was (that scene with the limbless woman, cinematography).

one confusing part solved by wikipedia. a few wtf moments where concept of the film took precedence over plot, logic, and common sense. overall a great movie. hooked from beginning to end, which is hard for me to say of most movies these days.

Just watched Legion "starring" Paul Bettany. Wow was that horrible! Sort of an interesting idea but just awful execution.

Just once in a movie I would like to see a group of people trapped in a building surrounded by zombies/aliens/etc. and at the point where somebody gets picked off and another person that cared most deeply for the first person just gets knocked unconscious for the rest of the movie because you know that person is going to become a liability.

Just saw Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. Pretty good but depressing. Also, Marisa Tomei is smokkkkkkkking in it.

Last night I saw The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Visually, it's an awesome movie. When it comes to creating beautiful weirdness there are better than Terry Gilliam. Solid performances throughout, but Tom Waits as the Devil takes the cake.

I liked it but it would have been a lot better without the aliens (which probably would have changed the entire movie, I admit). It gave me The Wire - Season 4 vibes. Jodie W. is also adorable in it.

^^ "Possession" is one of my all-time favorites, such a mind ****.

There's a great french noir called "serie noire", directed by alain corneau i believe, with patrick delawaere (sp?) in it which reminds me of "Possession" a lot, in the sense that he's acting extremely neurotic throughout. i believe he committed suicide right after he made it.

I wasted 80 minutes of my life watching The Girlfriend Experience earlier today. Hey, Soderberg, if you actually want to put somebody in your movie that maybe we've every heard of before I wouldn't be adverse to that. Yeah, I watched Bubble. It was a neat idea the first time. If I wanted to watch real people acting and talking like real people, I'd just go watch real people, and I wouldn't waste my time watching your movies. Also, props to getting a Appreciation star to be in your movie, AND THEN NEVER SHOW HER NAKED! WTF was that about! (end of rant)

I also watched Hoffa. That wasn't very good either, but at least it tried to be entertaining, which is more than I can say about The GFE.

 Awesome

watch heat next.

expect eviction notice.

+1 That's my favorite movie. The beginning robbery and the shootout in the middle will have your neighbors going nuts (especially the shootout scene).

Possession is totally demented. I'm still trying to decide if we're supposed to take the world of the film as "reality", or if it is supposed to represent the internal landscape of the characters. In other words, is it all in their heads? I wish I'd seen a clearer copy - I rented the Korean DVD release. It's the full 127 minute cut, but the image and sound were quite murky. I never really got a good look at the creature, for example.

It's definitely a movie that would benefit from multiple viewings - unfortunately I didn't find the experience sufficiently pleasurable to want to repeat it!
