What is up with sweaters that have cableknit patterns on the front but no pattern on the back?

Today I found a Ballantyne sweater that has cableknit pattern on its front side, yet its back side has no pattern.

To me this seems weird because I have never seen a sweater like that before.

Would most people who see a sweater like that perceive it to be weird?

What is the reason why a maker like Ballantyne would do that? Are they just being cheap, or is there a better explanation?
