Shipping to US with tracking costs a fortune..should I now charge this shipping by default? This will cost me in sales...or should I just count this as a rare occurrence and hope for better in the future?

I would just hope for better in the future. Anyone who wants to could file an "Item Significantly Not as Described" claim and almost always win, regardless of what shipping method you use.
