I know there are a lot of nice brown options out there, but sometimes, particularly here in NYC, brown just can't work after-hours; you need black. Assuming we're not talking boots here (I'm aware of the R M Williams chelsea option), what black shoes would you wear to go out?

Can/would you wear basic black penny loafers in this situation?

(Picture them paired with a dark, slim jean, possibly a dark shirt or jacket)

Find something that makes the black shoe less casual - in a blucher style, more broguing, actually I think a nicely chiseled monkstrap would work great in that situation. A monkstrap with a medallion, with a captoe even.

I'm not a fan of penny loafers, and if you do get them, I would certainly get it with the most interesting brown antiquing i can find.

I'm pretty sure most will not agree with you. In no situation is black more called for on jeans than brown, IMHO. I presonally prefer brown chukkas (suede if possible). Maybe that's just me - I feel a jean calls for a higher ankle than do dress pants . . .

I prefer black when going out at night. Shades of the old London rule.

I usually wear black monkstraps or black boots with denim at night.

I think it really depends what you mean by "basic black penny loafers".

If you mean the style linked below, I would say, "no, they don't work with jeans".

But, if you chose a more modern take on the penny loafer, I think this would work.

Here is a non-penny loafer that I think would be fine with dark, slim denim
