The purpose of cocktail attire is to be formally dressed in a jacket, without out-dressing the groom. It's not a more casual outfit. What you'd wear to corporate job interview is cocktail attire.

Solid-colored suit, either charcoal gray or navy, a solid white dress shirt, black oxford shoes, and a solid or subtle-patterned tie. You can also go with a blue shirt and brown shoes. No loud colors, no patterns on the suit or shirt, no business stripes or paisleys on the tie. Nothing that grabs attention or stands out.

Invariably, a few other gentleman in attendance at cocktail attire weddings are wearing slacks or chinos and a sport coat, with brown loafers or derby shoes, often with a casual necktie. I personally would not go this route because I own numerous suits, but it seems to be acceptable. At least, it would be at my wedding.

Agreed dark suit and dark tie. Although there is no equivalent phrase here in Italy, it’s what one would wear to a wedding that’s a notch below a tuxedo—or as we would call it, “uno smoking.”

June wedding, cocktail attire reception before buffet dinner at bride's parents home outside. Linen pinstripe suit with accessories toned done due to the stripes? Your thoughts?
