I don't think I'm a fan of the spring/summer scarf. Where I live, "affected" would be one of the nicer things said, although I'm the first to admit that Lansing, MI is no fashion capital.

I've a fan of spring/summer scarves in light weight materials. I have several in silk/linen blends that are a nice way to dress up a plain cotton jacket.

But with all the effort we put into our choices, its all affected to an extent. But if you can't allow yourself the smallest of indulgence or wimsy, whats the point?

Even here in Southern California, it can get quite chilly in the Spring. I don't own any Spring scarves, but one or two might be a nice acquisition. Of course, when I am not wearing a tie, I wear an ascot quite frequently, which fills some of the same functions as the scarf.

im seeing more scarf wearers in the warmer months this year, usually in a t-shirt with a huge camo rag wrapped around their chin. looks extra stupid if you get more than one in proximity or walking down the road together.
suit wearers with scarfs i don't notice so much. i guess they dont offend my eyes. or they just have better scarfs.

Last July 4th, I was wearing a cashmere sweater in Golden Gate Park - it was cold, breezy, and very foggy. I would think we can all agree that San Francisco is the exception to the rule when it comes to post-equinoxal scarf usage.

Because a pocket square is an honest, unaffected accessory. It's not trying to be something it isn't while at the same time being just right. A scarf in spring? That's what collars are for.

There is a difference between a nice lightweight scarf worn like a winter scarf, i.e. for warmth, on cool spring/summer days, and a scarf purely for show, draped over a t-shirt when it's 80 degrees and sunny. I have a linen one that I wore a lot this past spring when the weather justified it, and I'll be getting more next year.

I can see this, and find the former more sensible than the latter. But I still question how delicate/temperature sensitive one would be to find a linen scarf necessary. It's the same justification for the ascot, and I don't find that one very convincing, either.

Maybe my neck just doesn't get chilly.

Also convenient (i.e. functional) for indoor use when suffering from throat/nose/ear problems, to keep the neck region nice and warm (but not too warm, of course).

(Normally, I wouldn't tuck it in, but this way it is more practical for a keyboard worker.)

I'm still not getting, what people aren't getting about the functionality of a light scarf on a cold summer morning, just before the sun sets in. Is it that hard to understand?! Apart from the practical it can take an outfit a notch up, what's wrong with that? This is a typical 'Yes,...but, but'- discussion.

I have that scarf.

I find linen scarves quite useful for spring and summer evenings. It can get breezy and chilly at night on the Atlantic Coast, even if it's warm in the afternoon. My favourite is a largish gold-and-white scarf from Etro.

It has also doubled as a picnic blanket, a comfort blanket for a small child, a pillow and a makeshift turban! I expect if I end up on a desert island it will make an effective shelter and, eventually, a sail for my raft.

I've had it for years. The skinnier linen scarves you see a lot these days are just fashion items. I like them, though.
