Vents on outside trouser legs?

Walking in the Sydney conservative business dress over the past couple of weeks I have seen no less than 5 people wearing suits with trousers that have a 5cm high V-shaped vent on the outside trouser leg at the cuff (none on the inside cuff). Is this something new? looks weird and I m not sure whether or not I like it or not? Comments?

Guys and gals have been doing this with jeans for ages, and I've seen some casual combat of sport style pants like that (often with accompanying zip, buckles, or snaps) But on less casual trousers? never seen this.

Im in Brisbane. I know we are probably behind the times by at least a year. But I have never seen this in anything but casual clothes and I dont think it would look good. Ive got some vents on my chinos. I put them on myself with some scissors, they are unstiched and the vents give my pants a flared look.

it's old. Fad's already gone. Move to something else.

...which pretty much sums up my thoughts on the beginning of 'fads'. I'd rather go classic and be in fashion every now and then as the pendulum swings.... unfortunately, I have seen cool, I have been around cool and I am not cool.
