I would think this is no different than living in LA.
People are less 'out in public' in LA because they are driving all around suburbia vs. being in a city.

I stood in line behind Billie Jean King for 15 minutes during a flight delay in O'Hare about 12 years ago. She was disarmingly down-to-earth and fun to chat with. I think she appreciated the fact I didn't ask for an autograph and want to talk tennis too much.
