Hi,

I'm in the market for black tie attire. I've narrowed my search down to Hugo Boss. I'm torn between a shawl and peaked lapel. I'm aware that this question has been posed many times, but I'm a rather unique build. I'm 6'5 and require a 46L or 48L jacket and have a 35" waist. I know that peaked lapels are supposed to be flattering on tall, broad shouldered men, but I also like the subtlety of the shawl lapel. I plan on owning this suit for quite some time so I want to get it right. Unfortunately, i do not have photos. I'm just looking for general advice.

Thanks in advance.

Well out of both this lapel I recommend you to go with Shawl lapel tuxedo, it is always the safe option..

While I was a bit more partial to a shawl lapel, I ended up finding a Hugo Boss Cary Grant peaked lapel tuxedo on the bay for a great price. Now if I may ask, does anyone have any suggestions for a proper waistcoat to match? The Boss website has a cummerbund/bow tie set to match, but am I correct in thinking that a cummerbund should be reserved for a shawl lapel and not a peaked?

Hello, you have an 11 to 13 inch drop. I don't think that's readily attainable in an off-the-rack garment since virtually all off-the-rack suits will have a 6 inch drop (or 7 inch at the most).

I believe there is no problem with wearing a cumberbund with a shawl collared tuxedo. If you are looking for a vest I would highly recommend a u shaped waist coat with or without a shawl collar to match.

I just had one made for my tuxedo and it came out far better than I ever imagined. It really completed the look.

Traditionally, peak lapel pairs with a waistcoat and shawl lapel with a cummerbund. Though today, as long as you have a waist covering I think most would agree you're ahead of the game.
