Travel bags and flying

Hi everyone,

I've got a question about suit bags and traveling. I'm flying out tomorrow and I'm wondering if it's safe to check my suit bag as regular luggage. It's a regular travel suit bag, so it's not the toughest thing in the world, but i'm mostly concerned about the items getting wrinkled if they're thrown on the bottom of the batch.

Do you have any advice on this? Should I take it as a second carry-on with me?

There are two flights, totaling about 9 hours.

Depending upon how it's packed, it may get wrinkled either way. I'd carry it.

I try to carry onboard as much as possible especially when changing plans because that is when most luggage gets lost.

I don't trust the airlines. I had a huge Filson's canvas duffel that I checked coming back from skiing this winter and when I picked it up it was soaking wet and covered in boot prints.

Luckily, it was skiing clothing and washable, but...

I will check only waterproof, hard-sided luggage from now on.

I don't check luggage anymore. I've learned to pack light and efficiently.

+1. This can get challenging though for a week+ travel, particularly with the liberties passengers take with their carry-on these days. You're literally fighting for limited overhead space.

So true. Because of cramped bins, I switched to an 18" carry-on. With the assistance of a packing folder, my suit, shirts, toiletries, and laptop all fit into the carry-on without any problem. My suit was perfectly fine upon arrival without the need for any pressing whatsoever.

Thanks for the great suggestions, guys.

I would want to take it with me, but my only concern is that i'll have two carry-ons. I just hope that's not a problem for AA and Swiss Air.

Sounds like magic - packing folder, you say?

Current rules are one in the bin, one under the seat. You might be able to sneak two bin-sized bags on depending on how alert the crew is and how full the flight is.
