What's this deal where people create a big box of text with what they want to say, and upload it as a picture to their social media account? Why don't they just type that text into a status update?

It's mildly annoying, since it takes longer to scroll past whatever bullshit you think is pithy or profound

because capitalism promotes change for the sake of change--the semblance or simulacrum of innovation

because this kind of economic system advances (or distorts, however you want to look at it) aesthetic formations & patterns

because the particular economy we're talking about is social media, so that complaining about these new aesthetic patterns is actually just a source of more discourse, which is a source of more revenue; as long as dissatisfaction doesn't reach a threshold of people actually abandoning the service/product, then even whipping up more dissatisfaction is probably a net gain

because this particular development allows some people to emulate decorative word posters and decals, which promises to turn banality into some shared affective/intellectual resource and allows other people to complain about said banality, as if those complaints were actually some sign of cynicism/sophistication

Or because Facebook is just a circle jerk where people emulate each other because it gets them likes and makes them feel good.

haha nothing else to explain or think about

it generates $27 billion a year in revenue but that's nothing to think about too hard--stupid non-explanations are always the best explanations amirite
