I think he was going to lose it anyway - there was another category 1 climb to come after the descent. But, it is ****** to have to cancel it. I'm mostly surprised that they dont seem to have any established protocol as to whether end of stage bonuses will replace or stack with bonuses at the top of the climb in case of having to end a stage early.

Yeah I mean, he was supposed to have lost it during the time trial and he expanded his lead... He's also only up by about 40 seconds so nothing is set in stone. Considering his style, one day to get 40 seconds back and win it for France? We shall see.
