Good. I'll be even more optimistic.

Both good wines. The Cab ($30) more fulsome. The Rhone ($19) was a little oaky and light for my tastes, but pleasant. The cab was echt Alexander Valley, less fruit forward than Napa Cabs, but quite refined. Good for the price.

Wine and cheese with some friends tonite. Triple Brie, Rocquefort and Jarlsberg. Lovely.

Well it looks like my Napa itinerary is all set. Merryvale is out due to a prior commitment so I'm heading to Behrens & Hitchcock instead. I'm also comfirmed for Opus One, Rubicon and Cakebread. The best part is that all of these Trade t/ts are comped so all I will have to worry about is buying a bottle or two or three!!!! I love this biz!

Oh and I'm sippin' on a nice Touriga Nacional out of Bairrda...pics and notes to follow.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good Chilean wines or makers? (small-timer budget)

Look for Santa Ema. The producer has gotten very good reviews from Wine Spectator and in 2007 (I think) was rated best value producer in the world. They make cabernet, merlot, chardonnay, and sauvignon blanc and also have reserves. The 2007 cabernet got 88 points from WS (not that it matters but it's nice to know) and is about 7.99 a bottle.

Hope that helps.

+1 on the Santa Ema; their merlot is really nice. I also like Santa Rita, Meadalla Real Cabernet, the 2006 was 53 or so on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2009 and the 2007 is just as nice. Apaltagua also has nice Cabs and Pinots for $10 to $12. Overall there are plenty of great deals to be had from Chile.

EDIT: Oh and any level of Cono Sur is worth the nominal price tag.

Oi, too much wine last night. A little tender this morning.

Be gone over the Easter Holiday from the 31st to the 6th.

I killed that bottle of Touriga Nacional last night...save for maybe a glass. It wasn't too bad for the price but I couldn't tell if the mineral quality was just that or mild TCA poisioning

Congrats, man. you are coming at a great time, too. The gray is subsiding, the weather is starting to warm up (I think it hit 70 the day before I came home), and the sun has been shining a lot lately.

I'm visiting my folks upstate this weekend (which reminds me, Pio, I'll take pics of my '62 Tele for the other thread) and I told them to pick up an Italian white for my arrival tonight. Surprise surprise.

Had the 1992 Champagne that I had little hope was any good, and lo and behold, it was great. Not overly bubbly, but it had a complex, very different flavor.

Buffalo NY strip, mashed potato's and a trio of mushrooms. It was all absolutely delicious.
