Aside from the cherry, how could District Chophouse have messed up the Manhattan? It's two parts rye/bourbon, one part sweet vermouth, 1-2 dashes Angostura. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Don't underestimate the impact of a bad cherry.

Also stale vermouth could really **** up a drink.

Cherry just kills the drink if it's not a Luxardo or similar. Maraschino ruins everything. They only had two kinds of Rye as well, Bulleit and one of the DC ryes.

You'd think so, right? Tasted like the bartender let the mix sit in the ice for a while before straining so it came out all water.

Bulleit Rye isn't bad. The only truly objectionable Manhattan, assuming that the drink is made correctly, is one that contains a wheated bourbon like Maker's Mark. Of course, it's quite drinkable if it's the only rye/bourbon at an open bar. That happened to me once.

I think it’s a telltale sign that you need a new drink if it’s make or break based on fruit.

Old fashioneds are way better than Manhattans anyway aren’t they?

I was at Tony and Joe's on the waterfront on Saturday and ordered a bourbon rickey. Waitress said she'd never heard of it but she'd ask the bartender. She came back and said, "we don't have that." A DC bartender not knowing what a rickey is, just unconscionable.

I like both, personally. My home bar has poured an endless amount of quality Manhattans, following the traditions of my wife's family. Occasionally, a dry Rob Roy will be on the menu as well.

All this talk of cocktails. Am I strange for drinking rye on the rocks?
I like doing that as well. Found this nice Virginia rye.

I'll have to look for it at the local liquor store.
