Then again I also have said for the last year HCWs and other front line essentials should have been getting incentivized to continue working to counteract the lure of expanded UI and being able to not expose one's self daily to the virus. That equation has changed with the vaccine but the expanded UI hasn't.

That's because they can kid themselves that higher recruitment costs are temporary, while higher labor rates would likely become permanent.

I mean, I'm not going to deny that high and long term unemployment benefits have a distortionary effect on the low end of the labor market...

There is a certain share of people who would rather collect X money for no work then collect even X+50% but have to work a ****** job. And raising the starting wage at the ice cream shop from 12.50 to 15 isn't enough to counteract that.

But I dispute how many of those people are actually out there... And posit that they are likely crappy workers you don't really want to hire anyways.

Sign on bonuses from 2-10k are pretty common across all healthcare for direct care staff. Then there's shift differentials, holiday pay, shift bonuses on top of any OT for picking up shifts due to call ins (I've mentioned before nursing staff is horrible for last minute call offs) and various other inducements. Direct care staff and therapy staff can also take "traveler" contracts which not only pays more per hour but tends to come with a free apartment and per diem for daily expenses like meals. Wages have been increasing way faster than inflation for the last 20 years for this labour poo too, IME.

Definitely not from me. I am absolutely certain this is directly responsible. I remember reading somewhere that the expanded UI benefit equates to $13 to $15/hour depending on state, and I can't blame someone for forgoing working in a kitchen or packing boxes in a warehouse when they can play video games and day drink and pocket more cash for it
