Is there an advantage to getting a tailor-made tie? My measurements are far from average.

Where would I get a tailor-made tie in New York?

thanks,

The biggest advantage is being able to choose the interlining (or lack thereof).

I have some ties from Sam Hober that are genuinely a joy to wear - as odd as that sounds. The thick interlining(s?) he uses allow me to have a relatively thick four-in-hand knot that easily ties just the way I like it.

well i've had a bespoke tie made in hong kong for a wedding some time ago it was nice and cheap the only issue is unless you find somebody that specializes in that field it is unlikely he will have a large choice of silks to choose from......the only guy known in the US is as before SAM HOBER who has more or less the largest selection so far and a definite expertise

its funny u bring it up just today i had a guy asking me to make some custom ties for him (he was 6''4 and 3 times my width and don't ask me the weight......i need at least 4.5 yards of cotton for each of his shirts)

i'm actually building a website that will sell MTO ties with monogramming and other personalization etc i was actually thinking to buy with each run of ties made for me at the factory an extra bolt of silk to be used as matching linings and others accessories maybe some bespoke ties can be made for customers needing custom size......

actually the name of the label under which i will retail those ties is called: DIBENETTO
i created the user name on SF to promote it.....but im seriously behind schedule;too many other things to work on.........

I spoke to David from Sam Hober yesterday via e-mail. He and his family are doing well and they have completed their move. They will be taking orders soon. So far David has made about 30 ties for me.

The advantages are that I get to specify not only the exact length, but I have also asked him to vary the width of the small blade and to narrow and/or expand various ties at different points depending on the design and/or interlining that he uses as well as the various silks that he uses. David has also had silk made for ties which were based on input by his customers. The best part is that the tie is made indiviually for me and I don't have to think about whether my ties will be too short or whether the back blade is going to stick out. Custom made ties are definitely the way to go.

How far from average? FIH Ties sells extra short and extra long ties I believe...

Andy can shorten, lengthen , as well as chage the shape.
He also has an Ok selection of silk where he can make a tie.
You can also buy silk at Rosen and chaddick to have him make you ties.

Hello Trajan, You ask a good question, and I agree with the posted answers. In a few places in Italy, England and scattered here and there are tailors/shops that have very nice selections of silk. It would be fun and a result in a good fit to shop there. There is a tailor on Long Island that I do not personally know but have heard of - Montello - who sounds very interesting for the New York area. We tend to have on hand lots of classics and traditional Thai silks. Feel free to email me if you have questions about construction or fit before you visit a New York retailer - I will be happy to help you.

I insist on three-inch ties, so custom is really the way to go. I also like them one inch shorter than usual.

I will be ordering one from Sam Hober whenever he's ready to take orders.
