I have a Volvo XC70. Great car for kids, optional built in booster seats are very handy.
They are heavily discounting them due to a new model coming out for 2008. Insurance is very cheap too.

+1 on the Volvo. We started with an 85 240 and drove it to 180,000 and sold to my brother in law and he took it to 240,000. He just sold it and it was still in great shape. We now own a 93 940 and it is at 181,000 and want to get a sedan at this point. Really reliable car and safe. Remarkable power for a 4 cylinder.

I agree on the Subaru, but since he didn't want a Japanese car, I suggested the Saab wagon, which is built heavily on the impreza, but with more European styling.

Bought the new car, dealer has to transfer it from another location as she wanted a color they did not have in-stock. We should have it by Monday, unless something changes between now and then. I am not too enthused about it, but the wife is excited and the car is for her. Btw, we went with a German car...it has a propeller on the hood which she really likes. I will post a few pics once we take delivery.

edit: we went to Audi first, but she didn't like "the fancy volkswagen". I think the A4 Avant is a great car.

Great choice. Although I might be a bit late, I'd have suggested a used E39 540it. My uncle, who now has 2 children, has a 540it with some Dinan stuff in it. The thing hauls ass like you wouldn't believe. I beat the crap out of a Mustang GT one day when I borrowed it. The guy couldn't believe what the hell happened. He met up at the next light and asked me what the hell I had in the wagon.

I am looking forward to the day BMW can make a car that is better all-around than the e39 540 (with six speed manual). What a great drivers car.

If you move out of the US, you can get the upcoming M5 wagon, though I think the E39 is better looking.

RWD or AWD?

I tried to talk her into a wagon, but this is what she chose. Def not as cool, but I guess I am not the one driving it.

They do that in Europe as well. My parents just bought a V70 at a huge discount.
