I find that no sock, loafer look is best pulled off with chinos/jeans that have narrower leg openings. In my unsolicited opinion of the two outfits posted above, he would look better with a different choice of footwear.

Interesting. I think the shoes look good. A plain navy blazer pairs perfectly w/ #8 shell penny loafers imo. But I may be biased, as the Alden shell LHS is basically my oneshoe. The fullstrap is a bit too dainty imho. His shoes look like the C&J version, which I believe is a bit more substantial than even the Alden LHS.

Re. the jeans: I think we've been used to seeing tapered jeans the past several years, but I like jeans w/ or w/o a taper and think his look fine. Maybe the second could use a bit of taper and bit of break, but that would be some serious nit-picking. Which I guess this forum is all about. My nit would be no socks w/ a tie or even a sport coat. If it's cool enough for a sport coat, it's cool enough for socks. But people in the clothing business should push the envelope sometimes.

Growing up in a preppy community outside of NYC in the late 60's we all wore cordovan Bass Weejun loafers with blue or off white denim or five pocket cords. Unless it was 30 degrees out it wasn't cool to wear socks. The jeans of that era were trim fit and somewhat short.

Did you guys read the article? Ethan goes a bit over the top In ways that most (myself included) would not ordinarily do, in order to provide ideas. Or as he says: “It’s my job as a retailer to suggest things, and then for the customer to take it as far as they’re comfortable with.“

Personally I wouldn’t dress like him in some of these pics, but I understand why he does, and it’s certainly not awful.

I was not referring to the article. I was referring to the second picture. With the wide leg jeans rolled up and so high over those loafers, it makes the shoes look rediculously small. It’s a matter of scale and balance. To me, it makes them look like women’s shoes.

Then again, I typically wear size 13 (sometimes 14) shoes, so perhaps my sense of scale is off a little.

I hear you. Still, I view Ethan the same way I view Jim from Khaki’s. Sometimes it’s over the top, but that’s their job. When not at work he wears jeans and a t-shirt.
All of the pictures in the article were better examples. In most of those other pictures, everything worked together well.

Im glad you said that, as a fellow retail employee its what we do. We try to push our boundaries as much as possible. Not to meet the norm but to push the envelope. I wore with my outfit a pair of white sneakers because it is not in the norm but it helps push people to think differently

Designers call it their "Editorial" look because those are the things that get the press coverage. Yet, any retailer will tell you that 80% of what they sell are the standard grey and blue suits or similar traditional items. Amping up the look gets attention and encourages people to try something new.
