Well the majority of India consists of Hindus or people with a Vedic religion and most don't mind leather, speaking out of experience here.

seriously, most hindus that can afford shoes wear leather shoes. I knew a lot of pure vegatarians that wore leather shoes. there is a special business of tanning the hide of cows that, supposedly, died of natural causes. but I don't know how well that is policed.

I have been wearing leather shoes and using a leather wallet/belt since as far as I can remember.
Leather goods are commonly used in India.

How about Corfam, a synthetic substance that can look like patent leather? Black dress shoes made of Corfam seem to be readily available from suppliers of police and military uniforms at low cost.

What's your mate had on his feet since he learned to walk? Why is this suddenly a crisis?

Why wouldn't you get some imitation leather captoes with a rubber sole? They'll look pretty much like patent leather captoes, which are perfectly viable shoes for a wedding.
