No, no, no, don't waste your time at Cracker Barrel. You MUST go to Texas Tavern late at night. It's local, not a chain like Cracker Barrel, and quite original. Order "two hots with..."

Speaking of Paula Deen, I ate in her restaurant, The Lady and Sons, when I visited Savannah a few years ago. Great food!

Oh for Texas Tavern, it helps if you've had a few drinks, actually lots of drinks.

Okay my boss and I will get drunk and then go to Texas Tavern (if it is not far from Hotel Roanoke).

It's within walking distance, IIRC. I can't remember the street name.

True, I got to experience a few of them when I was dating a girl from up there but now if/when I make the trip up there it's for a show/party so I don't get to eat much beyond the late night pizza or snack.

I've honestly only been to Richmond a handful of times so my knowledge of the area is very limited but I knew Roanoke to be rather ****** as far as having decent establishments is concerned.

This thread makes me realize I'm not the only one in VA. (down by da beach boooyyyy)

Come on, the 'noke's not that bad!

It's small compared to Charlottesville & Richmond, esp. considering they're University towns.

Check out Metro!...it's worth the trip, and it'll be easy to stumble back to the Hotel Roanoke...just across the bridge.

Roanoke's more than twice the size of Charlottesville! (In terms of people, I mean -- definitely not based on number of decent restaurants.)

Well, come to think of it, it is pretty there this time of year with the Azaleas and Rhododendrons in bloom. When I was there three weeks ago, not two as I mentioned in an earlier post, not much was in bloom except for daffodils.

It's a great area for cycling. Peaks of Otter, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mountain Lake (several miles away), amongst many other venues all provide for great riding, especially centuries. Gee, I'm starting to miss the area.

As for roanoke- its been a while since I was there for work, but like everyone says there isnt much nice thats not chain-y. Christiansburg and Blacksburg (even the campus) are worth the drive. Unfortunately, your going to be there around the 1 years anneversary of the shooting, otherwise I would say get to the campus, there are several really good local restraraunts there.
