Hi,

I found a discounted Brioni tux jacket at the Neiman Marcus 40% off sale in DC. The trousers were not with it, and I may go back to see if I can get a further discount, as I am positive that it WAS once part of a suit.

In any case, I went to Field's Custom Tailor (nice guys, BTW) and found a Holland & Sherry 95% Cashmere/5% wool fabric that fairly closely matches the jacket. The catch is that the trousers would cost $750. Is it just me, or is that an extremely high price? I'd really appreciate advice on how to handle this - should I just return the tux coat and resume my search, or would it be possible to find a competent custom tailor in DC to match the tux jacket for around $350?

I guess I'd say don't do it with Fields (or anyone else) unless the fabric match is so close to being identical that no one can tell the difference. As for the price, that sounds about right, especially considering the fabric you are looking at. Even for cheaper/non-cashmere fabric, I'd think they wouldn't do slacks for less than $600. Good luck.

Kabert,

The fabric is darned close to a perfect match, but with a $1200 coat and $750 trousers the price adds up a bit too fast for my taste...

Yup. I'd think you could find a perfect Brioni (or Oxxford, etc.) tuxedo on EBay for closer to $1,000.
