What else would I call the place where you first bought me a drink?

not much of rules or manifesto, but some guidelines for my current style and taste:
muted colors that blend well (beige, brown, navy, grey)
very casual shirts (denim, collarless, flannel, checkered - always with breast pocket)
wider denim cuffed/rolled pretty high. Slimmer denim can be alloved to stack a little.
I also think (not always that conciously though) about context and associations of pieces that have to fit with each other (baseball cap goes with denim shirt, but not with a collar-less linen shirt for example)

I think I'm trimming down to a very sparse wardrobe again. I have too much **** and some of it is wretched.

I've been wracking my brains but I can't seem to find any rules I follow or do's and dont's when I get dressed. I find that I've been breaking every rule I set in my youth. I used to only wear shirts tucked in but lately I've found comfort (and joy) in not tucking. This is probably due to weight gain and not age. I also used to not be able to leave the house unless my belt and my watch matched my shoes. Again, I've relaxed this rule although I must admit that I still cannot bear to wear a black belt with brown shoes. I also now tolerate wearing a silver watch with a brass belt buckle, a no-no in my heyday. I guess I've become less anal with age and definitely more relaxed with the way I dress. To be honest I really only started wearing sneakers out of the gym about a year ago. I used to buy them and try them on in the house then change to leather shoes on my way out. Wow, I've just outed myself as a nut case.

I had to think on this for a while as I'm not big on rules for casual clothing:

Fit/silhouette is most important, with fabric a close second. Trim but not tight.

To me the jacket or coat and shoes most define the look.

Almost all my jackets either have four pockets on the front or are in the racer style. I guess that is what I like because I keep buying them.

Contrast - formal styles in casual fabrics, and casual styles in rich fabrics.

I like simple, clean, iconic design but with high quality materials and construction.

Texture, texture, texture.

I wear a ton of earth tones, especially olive greens.

Break is ok, but I'm not a fan of stacking.

No skinny jeans, they look ridiculous on a guy my size.

I almost never tuck in my shirt for casual, and I pretty much always roll up my sleeves. I don't like short sleeve button-up shirts.

Don't forget to wear cool socks.

A few simple rules I live by:

1. No tighty whities
2. No tassels
3. Always an undershirt with button up shirts
4. When in doubt, overdress
5. No sneakers with long pants except jeans
6. Change to old clothes when playing with the kids

no break in pants
chukka boots/semi-brogues for shoes
try to wear bootcut on all my pants
only v-necks for sweaters w/button downs
if I can wear a tie, I will
if I can wear a pocket square, I will
black, blues, greys, pastels and whites. earth tones freak me out.
win or go the **** home.

I thought I'd ask here so as not to make a new thread.

How much does sentimenality play into your personal style? Are there certain pieces that don't necessarily 'fit' with the rest of your wardrobe but that you cannot part with due to times had in them etc?

My current phase includes:

1. no t-shirts for casual wear or as an undershirt

2. no denim

3. little to no break in pants

4. everything slim-fit, but not tight

5. no jewelry

6. simple somewhat trad looks

7. Cordovan shell or Chucks for casual wear

8. Chinos with 2 inch cuffs

9. I don't iron my OCBD or polo shirts. I wear them with wrinkles.
