hi, across several brands (most recently Gap), my chinos come out of the wash for the first time with small but permanent white streaks in the dye. it's not detergent residue. I'm washing them inside out, alone, in cold water. what causes this? how can I prevent it in the future? and are there any brands making quality products that don't do this? picture below. thank you!

Think it’s dye coming off the fabric when it creases during washing. Shouldn’t happen especially if you’re washing inside out, but have heard of it happening with cheaper fabric. At that price point, have you tried Uniqlo chinos? No personal experience but have generally heard good things about them.

Yep, I like Uniqlo but they're a little too slim for what I'm looking for now. Might just splurge for some Bill's Khakis or Jack Donnelly but I like trying on in person

Cotton as a material doesn’t hold dye well, especially along creases, and generally that’s considered part of its charm—like the way denim fades. I wouldn’t mind those streaks but that’s a matter of personal taste. I remember back in the day when RISD students would artfully apply oil paint blotches to their khakis so they wouldn’t be confused with Brown students in the Providence bars…maybe they still do.
