Paisley Shirts: Cool or Stupid

I've seen lots of paisley/floral type shirts lately from Michael Kors and Etro for their spring and summer collections (like the ones below). They seem like they would go well with jeans just because they're different from a typical solid/striped dress shirt.

I've tried one or two on because they looked pretty cool hanging on the wall, but when I tried them on, something in the back of my head made me think a paisley shirt is just too loud to begin with.

Just don't know what it is with paisley, seems to resurface every 4-5 yrs and every time I see it I still find it to busy a print for clothing.

The only one that I've seen so far that I've liked was one from Udeshi, which had a very subtle paisley pattern on it and you had to get really close to the fabric to see it.

I've also seen them work occasionally well as layered pieces, but that's been rare.

I saw a guy wear a black one under a slim black blazer. It didn't look too bad, but I don't know if I could pull it off.

I think they also work as dress shirts, worn with a tie.

A blast of paisley under a good jacket can look pretty good, but it's too much without. Same goes for most patterned cloths IMHO that aren't stripes - which have the more streamlined, slimming effect...

These are nicer than the brightly coloured RLPL ones from a couple of years ago, at least.

I think it IS possible to wear them well... but I personally haven't found the magic formula yet.

It's like asking, Stripes: Cool or Stupid? or Plaids: Cool or Stupid?

It's just a type of pattern.

You can design the fabric, and wear the shirt, well or badly depending on your taste and skill.

Personally these type of shirts aren't exactly something I would wear. But based on the links that you provided, I think that the Bergdorf Goodman version of the paisley pattern looks a lot better in my honest opinion.

I like the way AHarris wears paisley: under a solid jacket, rather than by itself. I have a similar tan and cream linen paisley shirt I wear with a navy cotton sportcoat and jeans.
