Pairing oxford shoes with chinos

Another thing I noticed yesterday when I was cruising through old Sears and J.C. Penney’s catalogues from the 1950’s to 1970’s as a means of training my eye to what real fashion is all about…

how few shoes with laces are even featured in the catalogues.
it’s all loafers and slip on.
but no lace up shoes in general, oxfords or derbies. All loafers.

I guess men of style that wanted lace up shoes went to Alden or Allen Edmonds or Florsheim at the time? And the more uninspired department store one stop shop gentleman wore loafers and slip on shoes?

i think they are outdoor opera pumps/loafers?

Back in the 90's I saw a monk in Kyoto wearing something similar in a black and white harlequin pattern. He was too fast for me to get a photo.

They're Grecian slippers. They can be outdoor or indoor depending on sole. Bode, Bryceland, and a few UK makers do them in leather sole that can be worn outdoors. Drapers has them in a suede sole that is more for indoor wear but I wore them outdoors and added rubber soles to it.

I always associate Bob Dylan with Chelsea Boots, maybe that's just photos in the 60s UK press though ?

I kinda dig his 60s look, always reminded me of the French Students rather than Americana, almost as cool as George Harrison??

I spent college years here and in England. I certainly remember Chelsea boots (on both Atlantic shores). As I have a narrow foot I always needed laces ... so I wore chukka boots. Not quite as hip.

I think you had to be a bona fide rock star to get away with them to be honest and they never worked for me sadly ?

I really like Chukkas but they are just a bit too smart for my look

I've got three pairs of Clarks Originals Desert Boots in various states of dishevelment though as a nod to the sixties, a great choice with slim cut Chinos for that casual weekend mod look ?

Which part of England did you study in??

Got them in a shop in Corso Magenta in Milan--they specialise in garments for domestic staff. The labels were sewn onto the soles, so they came off.

I just took the timeframe and oxfords with chinos not matching the timeframe to be the objection, and since I took several people to have the same objection assumed they were right. I don't independently know that they don't fit within that timeframe, so I can't really explain further.

Maybe it's because the USA never had an empire, unlike Great Britain and France. But what do you think they wore in Rhodes, Corfu, Alexandria, Cape Town, Aden, Bombay, Singapore and Hong Kong? Do you think they were wearing wool overcoats, lounge suits and Oxfords? Or Linen and Cotton?

I think there are three groups under discussion:
(1) people who follow traditional styles,
(2) people who follow recent trends,
(3) people who create.

More concretely, in this discussion,
1) traditional styles = dark brown, burgundy, or black oxfords with worsted suits or tan or suede oxfords with tweed suits.
2) recent trends = any oxford, but particularly tan or blue suede ones, with chinos
3) creative = Keds or sneakers with linen or cotton suits, for example.

Imo, DWW likes 1 and 3 and dislikes 2. But that's more my take and not exactly what DWW has said. Imo, "creative" oxfords or the "creative use" of oxfords is really just a bad fashion trend and in poor taste. I don't think that's entirely subjective, but maybe it is, and I'm fine if others want to think it is.

I only wear Chinos and Cords, not because of any recent trend. Both "pants" have been around for over a hundred years. The reason I only wear these is that I am too old for jeans and cannot find 100% machine washable wool trousers/slacks or whatever. I am OCD and wash my clothing generally after one wear, I can wear up to three shirts a day simply because I can. I knew one guy that wore the same suit solidly for two years before having it dry cleaned. I would imagine that the rear of his suit trousers were stained yellow and probably hard and crispy.

As to why I wear Oxfords. They are the smartest and most comfortable GYW shoe. Loafers slip off my feet, Chelsea boots look weird and are uncomfortable, Derbies are generally unattractive, Monkstraps are for children. I do have Desert boots, but I would look like a geriatric Mod if I wore them often. Chukka boots are glorified Desert boots.

Thus they are the perfect combination.
I would avoid stone Chinos with black Oxford brogues, but tan Oxfords. Why not?

I do not wear trainers outside of the gym, but I haven't heard of Keds before so may investigate further.
