Tom's quite the eccentric in real life. A role model for us all.

"'The Company of the Ring shall be Nine; and the Nine Walkers shall be set against the Nine Riders that are evil....'" (Book II Ch 3; Elrond speaking)

When Vox gets nine identical pairs of bespoke riding boots, he can name them after the Nazgul.

Carry on with the Dr Who, gentlemen.

Nerdery and pedantry tend to go hand in hand.

Dopey, or anyone else, does 'Alpine' leather refer specifically to grained calf, or does it also refer to the color? A really dark brown would be nice, like on Vox's franken-shoe.

Two shoes at a minimum, otherwise walking will be a nightmare and you'll keep getting holes in the sock of the shoeless side.

It refers to the grain pattern, at least in Alden's leather swatches. There were different colors available.

Really? Where did you get to see Alden leather swatches?

No, I saw that in my attempt to create an archive for news stories on the makers I like. What "French cathedrals in Paris" did you visit wearing G&G's? I thought Notre Dame is the only cathedral, properly speaking, although of course there are plenty of interesting churches to visit. Have you seen the Delacroix murals in Saint-Sulpice?

If you say you made an express visit to Sacre Coeur, you lose a point. The only reason to be in that neighborhood (apart from teh sketch, which is your own business and no one else's) is to visit Delos or go to that chocolate shop run by that madwoman (A l'Etoile d'Or). Of course, the cat restaurant is not too far away.

Trunk show. They've got some nice leathers too, including navy suede.

I really don't know for sure, but I thought it was available only in their cognac color.
On the other hand, I checked how my shoe is listed and it says this: "Imported alpine grain calfskin in antiqued brown (#587) and black (#588)." That seems to imply that alpine grain might come in a color other than antique brown (which is a cognac). But I would be hesitant to think you can learn much from parsing catalog copy carefully.

Send Alden an email. They will respond in a day or two: generalataldenshoedotcom

Whoah. I'd love to see a full selection of leathers. Was there a calfskin with a bigger, more pronounced grain than the Alpine? I have never seen a cordovan color I really like other than #8 and black--the other stuff is kind of dull looking. Well, dark green is pretty, but I wouldn't wear such a shoe very often.
