New to watches. Would love your thoughts.

So here's the thing. I've never been a watch guy. I never liked the feeling one on my wrist. Now, for some reason, at the age of 33, that's changed. I still don't wear one every day, but if I'm wearing a suit, or a tuxedo, which I do often, I'll wear one. At the moment, I own just one watch, and while I'm not looking to become a watch collector, there are some that are catching my eye. I know very little about brands or mechanics. I just know what I like physically.
My style is classic masculine, slim, low profile and classic. I also tend to like non-circular watches. I love the look of the Cartier Tank and the Franck Muller Long Island. I know the Tank has a lot of variations, and the FMLI has only a few. I'm looking for something in gold or rose gold. Black strap.
Between those two, what are your thoughts on which model is the best investment, best to buy vintage or new? Would love ALL your thoughts.

The Cartier Tank Solo is about as classic as it gets. Being quartz, and not mechanical, you can get a beautiful gold watch for significantly less money (only about $5k brand new without any discounts) compared to a mechanical. Being "not a watch guy" I would assume you have no worries with going quartz over mechanical.

I'm ok to spend some money on this. I'd rather get something that is better in the long term. I'd like to do quartz. I see some of the Cartier Tanks have steel backs as opposed to gold all around.

BTW - when you speak of discounts, are people able to get discounts for that? Where and how? lol.

If you like Cartier, I recommend heading to a Cartier store and examining all of the various Tank and other models. I have a Tank Solo XL and it's a fine watch, and I have my eye on a Tank Americaine. The Americaine is a beautiful and elegant timepiece that works well under a dinner jacket, but you should try it on and decide if it speaks to you.

Finally, in my opinion, avoid quartz if you want to buy a watch. If you want a nice-looking piece of wrist furniture, then sure, the movement doesn't matter. But if you want a watch and buy quartz, chances are you will eventually regret that choice. Get a mechanical.

most authorized dealers will offer a discount off MSRP (except for a couple specific brands). You can also get discounts buying from grey market dealers.

1) unlike shoes - watches will command a greater investment
2) Thus do your research and understand what is it you will like
3) Always buy within your budget
4) I will always choose mechanical over quartz (there is actually not alot of quartz out there apart from the older PP and Cartier)
5) Man or Auto winding - i would always choose a man winding watch over auto (unless its a perp calendar)
6) Be open to other brands (besides Cartier and Franck M)

25% is going to be tough. Sometimes you can find 20%, but typically, it's more in the 15% range.
