Large knots on ties???

I have seen a few ties with very large knots in them, examples would include most ties from the movie, "A Clockwork Orange" and P. Diddy has worn a few ties with huge knots.  

My question is whether a certain wide tie is neccesary for this or is it a certain way to fold the run of the mill department store tie.  I'm guessing the former, but would be extremely pleased to be wrong.

I'm almost strictly a half-Windsor man, and in my experience the knot size is directly related to how wide the leeward end of the tie is. I've got some great ties where the front is medium-wide, but the opposite end is pretty skinny, and I always end up with a skinny knot. I save them for my button-down collar shirts.

Of secondary consideration would be the thickness of the material itself. A thicker tie (where "thickness" is the depth of the cloth from front to back, opposing "wideness" as the span from left to right) tends to bulk up a knot more, where thinner material will compress when tightened.

I've heard that there are knotting strategies that can make a skinny-ended tie produce a substantial knot, and force a wider tie to produce a knot of glorious mafioso proportions, but I've never seen any techniques. I'd also be interested in finding out how those sort of longish, cylindrical knots that were popular a few years ago are produced.

I was just browsing through an old GQ and flipped past an article teaching how to tie a tie, I flipped back to it just in case it showed how to tie a wide tie, and it sure enough did. It did note however, that you need to button your jacket because the tie will be short.

1. with the fat end on your left, go halfway around and plant your left thumb where the two ends of the tie meet.

2. go all the way around and then, with your thunb still in place, go all the way around again.

3. bring the fat part up and under, and with two fingers fork open the knot from below and draw the fat part through.

4. holding the skinny end, tighten the tie and adjust the knot. the tie will be short. button your suit jacket.

The secret is patience, it is supposed to be a 5-10 minute process to get it perfect. The writer Fabio Schiattarella, general manager of Capriani Dolci, NYC, has said it has taken 20 min. before.
