At any rate, I like the Gold label best. The flavor profile is the most appealing to me, but as with all things, it is a matter of taste. Just because one costs more than another does not make it better. I also like Green label, as it is very different from the rest of the JW blends, in fact more like a single malt. I've had Blue as well and concur that it is not worth the price it commands. I would rather have a bottle of Gold and two or three Greens for the same $.

I think I'd just cowboy down a bit on calling people ignorant before you figure out whether your arse is punched or bored. Most of us just assume people know SMS and blended are two distinct things and didn't want to seem like we were insulting peoples' intelligence. You however, seem to have no such inhibition.

Indeed, high price =! good taste. The point is, you can get very tasty SMS, for well under the cost of a premium blend. Given this, why pay more for a blend? But I'm ignorant, so what do I know?

It's not apples and oranges. They are two distinctly different kinds of apples. Limiting yourself to one brand of a particular kind of apple is to deny yourself of the joy found in all the other apples out there (keep in mind the OP did admit being new to the world of scotch).

Besides, it is my opinion that one can do much better than Johnnie Walker's upper tier blends at the same price point. It's also a lot of other scotch drinkers' opinion as well. YMMV, however.

I apologize if my original post came off as being arrogant or ignorant (or worse, both), but hopefully my point is now clear.

Any whisky heads in the Seattle area on April 17th are welcome to come to a BYOB tasting party I'm hosting. PM me if you want details.

Im a novice at it, but I'd like to learn more about the whole nosing process, etc. so that's why I'm hosting this thing. Gets people to show off the bottles that they love and usually pulls in new fans.

I like Blue the best but it is not worth the price premium over Gold. Green is good but has more peat than either Blue or Gold IMO and, as such, is quite different from the two.

Prole here. I like Black, and prefer it to any single malt other than Laphroig. Blends and malts both have their place.

The bars in Melbourne leave Sydney Bars for dead. Plasma's should be banned.

whats the smallest bottle of BL that you can get? I heard they were selling 200ML bottles at duty free stores at the airport? Is there anything between that and the 750ML?

I think gold tastes the best for me, with black being very close to it (in terms of ranking). Have yet to try a blue label, though I will soon

Taste-wise, for me it has always been:

Blue
Gold
Green
Black
Red

(and in fact the Gold and Blue are not too far apart)

Quality v. Price wise:

Gold
Black
Green
Red
Blue

I say that because you can get such absolutely incredible single malts for the price of Blue that I only have it on the bar to have it on the bar. I also have a bottle of JW Swing, but have never opened it. I may not. The only bottle of JW I drink with any level of routine is Black, which was my first Scotch and remains my 'everyday' scotch as well as the scotch I mix in cocktails.

The labels all pretty much taste the same to me.
Kinda papery with a hint of adhesive.
