James Bond to wear Crockett & Jones

We have decided to participate in a fairly minor capacity as we have read a number of facts on a few threads that are simply incorrect. This can be potentially damaging to our company and is certainly not adding any value to anyone on SF or SF itself.

We are not going to use SF as a sales tool, nor do we want to detract from what a great job SF does. It brings so many companies very good publicity and it is a platform for many genuine customers to discuss there opinions and experiences openly.

Crockett & Jones is as genuine as a company can get and we'd like to keep it that way, as i am sure our customers would too.

Are you doubting that companies pay for product placement? Because in Hollywood these days, they've started more and more to build plots around product placement rather than going the other way around. It's really big money these days, and having the character walk into a store with your name on it would actually be a fairly subtle means of going about it. Pay attention to how many movies open with a car driving up, camera panning in on the grill with an extremely close shot that ends up with the lens about a foot away from a giant ford logo.

Heineken already spent a boatload of money to have James Bond drinking beer rather than a vodka martini in the upcoming movie. If you don't think that the James Bond people are requiring barrels of money to associate their name with James Bond, you're nuts. Daniel Craig might have requested them, but Crockett and Jones wouldn't be able to mention that association without a massive copyright lawsuit unless they paid the studio a whole hell of a lot of money.

In this era of movies, if you ever see a brand name, obvious or not, they've paid money to be there. Having a main character representing a certain element of society you want to market to walking into your store as the first thing they do when they have money again? That's not just product placement, that's a flat out ad, and there is absolutely no way a studio executive would let that one by without a decently large sum of cash on his desk.

Actually if i remember correctly, Brioni never paid a cent to be in the bond movies. They just agreed to donate 50k worth of suits for goldeneye in exchange for having their name in the credits. In fact its only in Die Another Day which was like 4 movies later that we see the tag on a shirt and a hanger in the scene where he is shaving off his beard in Hong Kong. Until then and unless you had an HD movie player/TV you would never be able to tell the brand of suits he wore without waiting through the credits. Tom Ford I'm not sure if they paid or not but again there is not a single scene in QoS and skyfall where the brand is flashed, unlike Omega and their awkward unnecessary close up wrist shots. But i do know the switch from Brioni to TF was per actor request.

Well its no real surprise. I mean ever since TF came out with their menswear line they have been the darling of hollywood males at the red carpet and after the success of Casino Royale if he requested Hugo Boss they probably would have given it to him

Crockett & Jones was an affiliated brand in James Bond's SKYFALL, not a sponsor. We did not pay for our product to feature in the film, the product was chosen on its own merits which for everyone involved at C&J was a very proud and exciting moment. James Bond even pays full price for his shoes!

One of our shops also featured in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and again, this was not paid for at all. It was requested by the production company and we of course were flattered at the offer to feature in the film and thought it would be very good for the brand and accepted.

I suppose a good opportunity to thank, once again, the production company that thought Crockett & Jones was a worthy brand for their great films.

Our Factory shop never goes on sale. Crockett & Jones retail sales are in January and at the end June, which is quite standard throughout retail.

Few suggestions (may be useful):

I'd like to see some Handgrade shoes on the 236 last (you phased them out 3-4 years ago), or similar. I simply detest the elongated 337 last.

There's nothing for me to buy at Handgrade level.

Brogues look 'ok' on the 337, but I feel that that style needs a more rounded look (e.g. Trickers 6038L).

I'd bring in a Handgrade heavy brogue, perhaps double-leather soled in oxblood (you don't do oxblood), chestnut or burgundy. Or even a range: brogue, semi-brogue and oxford in that style. Church's used to make the Burwood in lovely reddish leathers years ago. That's the sort of thing I'm thinking of.

The chestnut chelsea boot on the 238 last simply doesn't fit me well, and I know other have said, like me, that it's too tight across the vamp at usual size and too loose at half a size up. I would make it on the 341 last, as you do the jodphur boot.

The Snowdon in Oak wax Hide is a lovely boot, but I would never buy it. The leather is far too fine quality (and soft) for country walking. I've seen pictures of boots which are scuffed and cut to hell. How about making country boots from extremely high quality (and tough, abrasion resistant) walking boot leathers?

Anything else comes to mind will add.

Micheal (Gordon Gekko) walks into the Jermyn shop and tries on one pair of shoes and tells the asistant: "I'll take 5 pairs in the same size & colour" Classic. ...or was it 8 pairs.

Mr Murphy (Shop manager) tells me Daniel Craig a regular client at the Jermyn store, hence, how: Daniel/Bond/Crocketts became affiliated.

Overall, I am a big fan of C&J's - my first ever pair of quality men shoes was from Crocketts. Still have them after 9 years of good service..
