^ Mine were very soft from the beginning.

I actually do use benzoyl peroxide, but this must be a coincidence...as yeayea said, it's in spots all over the pants and I thoroughly wash my hands after using it, dry my hands on a towel and thoroughly wash my hands again.

Maybe Dashaansafin is onto something when he said it maybe related to bleaching agents in the broken in chinos? Again, these pants were the only item that was affected in a wash full of colors...how the bleach could get in each pocket and all over the legs without touching anything else is a mystery to me.

This just happened to me. I bought a pair of seersucker (or some kind of textured stripe) club shorts and when I wear them outside in the sunlight they have a mottled pattern. It is most definitely not bleach damage. My girlfriend had this happen on all three pairs of shorts she has bought from J. Crew. It doesn't seem to happen until after they go through a round in the wash. Crappy dye perhaps? Weird though because it hasn't happened on any of the other million items I have bought from them. EDIT: not saying the OP's problem isn't bleach

Own about 8 pairs of j. crew chinos, and one garment-dyed jean. Washed more than several times now and do not see any problems. My shirts have been through the wash too and are fine.

I think what we're seeing reported here is the exception.

Just to echo the chorus, bleach or benzoyl peroxide (which is a mild bleaching agent) will do this to black, blue or gray cotton. Sweat occasionally will as well (at least I have seen that happen to one of my t-shirts).
