Is there a rule against wearing a hat without also wearing a jacket?

Why would you not wear a hat?

It seems like a half-assed attempt to be a traditionalist - someone who would care a lot about rules. I think if you dress in a way that clearly shows you are an unconventional dresser and you choose a rather noteworthy hat, it can work. If it is just a rather conventional, conservative and high quality outfit with a conventional hat added, adding the hat can look a bit square. I mind the hipsters who do it less than the mainstream, well-dressed guys.

Yes there is but only if you live in the 20s or are taking part of a Hemingwayian safari.

A traditional fedora wroks with dark plads and traditional Northwwods outdoor clothing. Earth tones are best. If you wear it in the city, and want to pull off the look without a jacket: earth tones.

NO "rules" exist about anything of this ilk to do with clothes - they are merely in some people's minds for some strange reason, however it does not stupid to do so. An exception of course would be a beanie or a baseball cap which are worn in their own circumstances.

There is a guy in my office who fancies himself quite the fine Southern Cracker.

Of late, his favorite combination has been dark colored double pleated trousers, French blue contrast collar and cuff shirts, with French cuffs, and various Panamas. No jacket. No tie.

It is actually quite grotesque. But, I have myself to blame since I have basically thrown down the sartorial gauntlet in the office and have declared the casual office dead...at least as it relates to me. Others, are trying to follow in my footsteps. It is quite interesting.

To me, going out in shirt and tie but no jacket is bad, hat or no hat.

This has to be one of the most foolish threads I've ever seen outside of DT!

If I am walking my dog a couple of miles and the temperature is 90 degrees out, I damn well WILL be wearing a hat. I also will NOT be wearing a jacket.

Any person who spends much time out in the elements and does not wear a hat of some sort is a fool!

As to fedoras being in appropriate sans jackets, there are plenty of "sport" fedoras that are fine with shirtsleeves. A very dressy fedora would be anomalous, I admit.

Indiana Jones looked pretty good performing all sorts of derring-do in his fedora.
