F'ing pirate shirt. I have the same thing on the navy aran knit I bought earlier this winter. On some wears it is less pronounced than others, but it's always there. At first I thought I didn't care, but the last few times I considered wearing it...I ended up putting it back and reaching for something else.

You can have the shoulder reset by a knit alterationist, if you have one local to you. That's what I had done on mine. I own both the cream and navy ones.

FWIW, I find it doesn't happen on some of their Arans. The MTO Aran cardigan I bought from NMWA doesn't seem to have it.

Interesting. I'm going to explore some options. Guessing it's not an inexpensive operation...

RE: your cardigan not being full pirate, do you think that is a result of a request on the part of the NMWA guys? Whenever I read that x item has been "expressly made" for an individual store, I always wonder how far their specifications would actually deviate from the house model, if at all.

No idea. I assume @gdl203 can answer that. FWIW, @unbelragazzo recently posted a picture somewhere of him wearing an Inis Meain Aran. I remember it being smooth in the shoulders. I assume he got his from No Man Walks Alone, so maybe none of their stock had this problem.

One of my Arans is totally fine, but the other was very square with puffy shoulders.

I've noticed something similar on a gansey I bought a few months ago - I haven't worn it yet so maybe it will settle a little.

If not, it will still work nicely under a jacket, so whatever.

No Man Walks Alone and A Suitable Wardrobe also got in some linen pieces. I still think they make the best linen knit around.

And we're gearing up for another awesome MTO event for our NYC Trunk Show in 2 weeks. We'll have linen options, linen donegals and linen-stitched cotton/cashmere

Hey gdl, do you have any insight into the "pirate shirt" issue some folks were talking about? It sounds like the knits you carried didn't suffer from this problem. Is this something you had to address with IM?

No we didn't specify anything. I'm having a hard time visualizing the issue though... But it sounds like they may be related to how they were stored in the shop that sold them?

I can't speak for everyone else, but mine came directly from IM. I had the hope that it would settle down with some wear but that has not been the case. Unless I'm mistaken, this only seems to be a problem in the Arans.

This picture actually does a pretty good job illustrating the issue.

See the puff at the shoulder?

I have never seen anything like this with our IM pieces. I'm not sure why this is happening here but it does look off

Yeah, mine is nowhere near that bad but definitely has that effect as well. Mine is not an aran btw. You can see in the product photo where the shoulder is slightly higher at the seam, causing it to have a more structured look than a natural drape.
