How important is it to have one of those? I have a 400 dollar pair of Salvatore Ferragamos. Will using one of those prolong the life significantly?

Very important. They are called shoe trees. Use them after each time you wear the shoes. (Every other day at most.)

you gotta take them out before the shoe tree goes in. Hows it gonna wick the moisture out of the sole if there's a rubber barrier in between??

I always take them out just because it seemed the right thing to do, but at the back of my mind I wondered: if I've got topys on the bottom, and foam inserts on the top of the sole, can moisture actually get in there? Is that what happened, javyn, or did the insoles prevent the trees from keeping the sole flat?
